I was on an 8 day Carnival cruise and preferred an excursion for La Romana which focused more about wild birds and wildlife instead of history or local architecture. I have to stress there was a little misunderstandings once we departed the ship looking for our taxi, because the staff on the dock does not really help passengers using private providers. The trip up the river was calm so we loved seeing locals, anglers, and lots of fauna throughout the cruise. We arrived at the farm and began a guided tour. There is a superb butterfly conservation area and the staff offered a wonderful presentation about the life of the butterflies. The children were actually able to hold a few caterpillars. Being a adult, I actually think it is awesome. There's a quick walk through the jungle (rainforest) where we saw purple hummingbirds (a thing I have never observed before).
